“She’s at your place?” Callan asked while checking the equipment on the vessel.

“Yeah. I got her settled before I left.” Jared still had more time left on his light-duty restrictions but felt good and was assisting with the restocking.

“Why? I mean, she just lives over your garage, so why have her in your house?” Andy asked, his incredulity apparent. “If she’s that sick, you don’t want her spreading germs everywhere.” He was hosing down the deck and turned to look over his shoulder. “I guess she could clean for you since you'll have to disinfect the house when she leaves.”

Hands on his hips, Jared caught Callan’s smirk before he turned his full attention toward Andy, who’d never met a woman he wanted to spend more than one night with. He didn’t know a lot about his friend’s background, considering Andy tended to keep conversations light. All he knew was that his mom had left when he was a kid, leaving Andy’s dad to raise him and his brother. Jared wasn’t into psychoanalyzing his friends and coworkers, but he had a feeling Andy’s non-trust of women stemmed from mommy issues.

“Look, man, I’m not making her scrub my house. She got sick because she was stuck in the ER after being a good person and taking care of me. I was an asshole to her on more than one occasion, and she didn’t deserve that. While I’m at work for the next couple of days, she can recuperate at my house, keep Daisy company, and with a full-sized stove and refrigerator, she’ll have more than what she has in the efficiency.”

Ryan had walked out onto the deck, bringing another box of supplies with him, hearing the last of their conversation. “Makes sense to me, but I’m curious. You make it sound like there’s something wrong with the efficiency, yet you stayed there when you first bought the place. And you’ve been renting it to her.”

He worked to keep the grimace from his face. “No, there’s nothing wrong with it, per se. It’s exactly as advertised—an efficiency. Plus, the real estate agent went over everything with her when she rented, so she knew there was just a mini fridge, a hot plate, and a small microwave. And when I was over there checking on her the last couple of days, she’s a perfect renter. Neat and clean. But it’s also really… well, closed in and small for someone who’s sick.”

“I don’t know a woman that doesn’t spread their shit out everywhere!” Andy said, shaking his head. “Hell, that’s why I don’t take anybody back to my house. The last time I had a bar pickup at my house, I woke up the next morning, and they had all their makeup on my counters, travel bottles of shampoo in my shower, and they were digging through my refrigerator! Nope, not for me!”

Torn between wanting to slap Andy on the back of the head and rolling his eyes, Jared decided that ignoring his friend for the moment was the best course of action.
